Its’ been a little quiet on the modchik lately for good reason. You see I have two kids (12 and 4… yes you can ask… yep same dad) <– the gap is most definitely apparent as they don’t share too much in common except for one thing last week… fifth disease. I could swear that my soon to be 13 year old went through this or was at least exposed to this about 10 years ago in preschool or maybe I am confusing this with HFMD (hand, foot mouth disease). Hmmm well doesn’t matter now because they are both sick. Fifth Disease also known as Slap Cheek or Parvo Virus B19 and what I later learned is not the same parvovirus that veterinarians may be concerned about in pets, especially dogs, and it cannot be passed from humans to animals or vice versa.
I knew my daughter had been recently exposed in her preschool but I really didn’t think she would fall ill. Its a sneaky virus, like most, you aren’t even aware that your child is infected until its to late to isolate. I picked her up from school on Thursday and she went downhill quickly, she barely moved in her car seat on the way home and asked if she could just rest in her seat went we arrived. Within hours she became chilled and that night had a fever (100º) while her brother seemed just fine.
That night the itching began with the 4 yr old.. No visible rash (tell tale sign of fifth disease) but that didn’t matter my daughter was scratching her tummy raw. I applied Rescue Remedy Cream which got her back to sleep for another hour (yawn). but by the morning I had 2 vomiting children down for the count. I called the nurse on call at my pediatricians office (who by the way is phenomenal if you need a doc in the Newport Beach, Ca area email me) and she left me the most detailed instructions, everything I could be doing I already was. The 12 yr old has what typical teens and adults experience, arthritis like joint pain. He had pitched prior to Thursday which made it worse. The aches were enough for him to ‘consider’ taking a pain reliever which is unheard of by my son’s own admission. We break out the Motrin for braces and fractures period. For him to start ransacking the medicine cabinet for chewable Motirn meant he was experiencing REAL pain.
There is no magic pill to treat fifth disease just like most viruses out there. And given my stance on western medicine (I don’t DO antibiotics (unless its a bacterial infection like pneumonia) because a) my kids are prone to stomach aches and they can not tolerate them and b) antibiotics are way over prescribed. With now treatment plan I was in need of an alternate solution. Time for a trip to the Earth Clinic. At first sign of any ailment or illness I visit www.earthclinic.com. Earth clinic is a community where holistic remedies are shared and discussed. Online since 1999 there are solutions posted for over 350 illness and diseases. Thanks to this site I learned about the magic of ACV (apple cider vinegar), coconut oil and the super liver tonic drink lemon & hot water (which I drink every day).
Earth Clinic is not meant to replace a doctors diagnosis rather it’s meant to be site where others experiencing the same symptoms or health concerns can share there experiences with different treatments natural or not. I also like the fact that your search yield results on GOOGLE as well as Earth Clinic’s site. With a little searching I learned that there was really no cure and the best thing for me to do was to start an immune boosting program with both kids, limiting sugar and increasing fluids. I know the parvo virus can saturate the lymph system making it difficult for the body to respond and get rid if the virus. Ironically I have been reading up on the lymph system in great detail recently after being sick and tired of well… being sick and tired. I started searching Earth Clinic on remedies to help a sluggish lymphatic system and ways to boost liver support (for better detoxification). Its nearly impossible to get my kids to drink teas and take herbal supplements (and some are not appropriate for children I realize that) but I can get their systems back on track by giving them a probiotic to combat the chronic diarrhea and I can make them smoothies with (greens powder, protein, and omega 3s). Every little bit helps so I am trying to skip the 7up and other refined sugars (pssst did you know that when you ingest sugar it suppresses your body immune system?) I found a very thorough article all about Sugar on Ask Dr. Sears website you can read it here.
here is an except from his article:
“An overdose of sugar. Eating or drinking 100 grams (8 tbsp.) of sugar, the equivalent of two- and-a-half 12-ounce cans of soda, can reduce the ability of white blood cells to kill germs by 40 percent. The immune-suppressing effect of sugar starts less than thirty minutes after ingestion and may last for five hours. In contrast, the ingestion of complex carbohydrates, or starches, has no effect on the immune system.”
PLEASE if you have kids take a moment to read and commit to eliminating ADDED sugars from their diets.
You can find Dr. Sears online too – click either to follow.
I am committed to getting a grip on my kids consumption of sugar as well as my own. All I need to do is remind myself that sugar leads to attention problem, hyperactivity, unhealthy weight levels, inability to focus and not to mention diabetes. The list goes on and I need my kids healthy and I need to find that continuous source of energy that will carry me through the days when both kids are down and still manage to fight! (yes they do fight, hard to image over what but trust me on this one). And remember those Seven Bell bottom jeans I ordered a few weeks ago? They didn’t fit. Not even the 30s, gulp… this momma needs a plan.
Earth Clinic also has a sister site Earth Clinic Planet where you can tips from organic gardening to alternative energy sources.
♦Tuesday am update♦ – determined to get he kids back in school… the 4yr old is still sensitive/emotional which I think has something to do with her not feeling well and the 12 yr old still complains of back pain but I pumped them up on vitamins and smoothies so I think tomorrow is a GO! (Hallelujah!…. Hallelujah!)
Wanted to point out when I am writing these posts I always try to link to the books/sites/products that I use and love, scroll over those colored words and a link will appear – just click and go. I am in no way paid to endorse any of it. If I was I would tell you in BOLD writing. To make it easier to find what the modchik loves most … I set up an Amazon store where I can keep all my favorites nicely organized in categories. I will add a button in my side bar this week that will link my store so you can look for something I blogged about. I also call it my coffee fund as a few cents may be sent my way as a result of your purchase from my associate store, but let’s be clear I’m not going to make a fortune with that.
