I just realized I have been withholding something from my readers. I may have alluded to the fact that I deeply love 80’s and you already know how much I live for music but I don’t think I have truly revealed my love for all things Duran Duran or “Jewran Jewran” as Simon says. I grew up with the poster lined walls of the fab 5, mixed tapes in my Sony Walkman, headphones permanently smashed against my ears effectively guaranteeing tinnitus by my early 30s. I lived for each new track release scrimping together allowance for my weekly trip to Tower Records where I thumbed through the 12″ import section hoping to discover some obscure B-side vinyl from the boys of Birmingham.
While I collected albums, posters, pins and Tiger Beat covers the band became one huge poster child for MTV. My parents weren’t about to fork over their hard earned money for cable so I had to take matters into my own hands. As a babysitter without cable and the threat of missing the worldwide video premier of “Is There Something I Should Know” I began an aggressive self marketing plan targeting homes with babies and MTV. Ultimately I got my MTV and I got paid for it.
Now here’s the part where I am sure I am going to lose readers (or gain if you happen to be a fellow Duranie.)
Duran Duran is releasing a new album All You Need Is Now on December 21 and I am all but consumed again with anticipation and excitement if you haven’t heard the reviews it rivals Rio. I am that 16 year old minus the lipstick covered posters with a better set of speakers and a bigger ticket budget. My me to me gift under the tree will include no less than a digital download, the cd and of course the shiny vinyl version (with the 4 bonus tracks) as well and then you are going to have to listen to me day after day as I recount my fond memories of the boys who would be known as the next Beatles. And it won’t end until I see them again live and let me just apologize now to my family who will have to bare witness to seeing mom morph into groupie only to have her return without her voice, her sanity and the good sense to just be happy with 2nd row seats.
Friday night (my other husband) Simon Le Bon and Nick Rhodes were on Mark Ronson radio show Authentic Sh*t spinning a couple tracks of the new album. It was so good to hear the boys again and even better when Simon read one of my tweets LIVE on the air! I’m sure they thought I was all sorts of crazy (the 140 limit prevented my entire stream of consciousness from showing … I was trying to say crazy good ….but as I sitting there in the afterglow of hearing The Man Whole Stole a Leopard this comes rolling of my keyboard… no wonder Simon sorta stumbles reading this …its nonsensical.
and what was even more entertaining was the technological malfunction that happened that almost caused me to miss my shout out from Mark and Simon. Hey thanks mercury retrograde for confirming your existence. Nick comes back on the air and comments about how many people are tweeting to the extent he feels like the roof may cave in and then all of the sudden….. it goes silent. Take a listen.
How surreal to be sitting there in my pile of audit paperwork having Simon read my tweet, the rest of the video is me laughing and telling my 4 yr old how cool that just was to which she responded, “I’m hungry.” Kids…. they bring you right back don’t they?
