Instagram Intervention

02.20.11 By Lindsey G 7 Comments

Ok, I’m 10 days into the iPhone and you know what? All of you were right, I am hopelessly addicted. Instagram isn’t helping either. I don’t even care that it doesn’t loves me back. Wait. What on earth did I just say? I sound like one of those people who fall in love with inanimate objects, gah. You know people actually marry objects right? Yes they do. There was a woman who married the Eiffel Tower.  I can see the attraction I guess, if you are one for constantly needing to feel in control then my guess is a iPhone will never let you down, unless of course you drain the battery.  The article about the woman who married 984 feet of steel mentioned that people with Aspergers disease often form attachments to things because of fear of attachment to people. If they attach themselves to an object there is a sense of self protection because after all the cell phone (or any object for that matter) isn’t going to abandoned them. I find that utterly fascinating. I guess if things don’t work out with my husband… I kid I kid..

I’m sure if you follow me on facebook or twitter you’re just about peaking on my instagram’s updates. I’m sorry but I just can’t stop, it’s a compulsion yes I realize that. I think most photographers, feel the need to capture everything that strikes them as pretty, or maybe pretty isn’t the word, inspiring is maybe better. What I love about instagram is the sense of community and the way it connects me to others who share in the same addiction, er I mean hobby.

Instagram reached over 1 million users in just over 3 months. It took Twitter 2 years to get 1 million users.

Instagram is a FREE iPhone app (rumors suggest an Android app is in the works) that let’s you snap a photo, select from a few different processing choices and then upload it to your instagram streem where your friends who follow you on instagram can see and comment on. Here’s how it works.

Open up instagram and you are given a square viewfinder to compose your photo. Click on the stack (bottom left) if you want to share a photo you took with the phone camera or use a photo you downloaded from another camera. Personally I am a bit of a purist and I only use my iPhone photos, that’s not to say I won’t in the future but for now, I’m sticking to just my phone, Lord knows I have enough distractions already. amen.

After you take the photo you can move it around to align and crop, after you are done it will take you to the next step… EDITING. You have the option of leaving it AS IS or applying one of the 15 different filters and then post it to your instagram feed.

I shot this one yesterday of me sitting at my desk when I was supposed to be cleaning out my office, you should have seen what was behind me on the floor.

See how fun this is? Your photos are instantly transformed!

I ended up posting this one using the Apollo filter.

Another cool feature is you can also post this to your Twitter account as well as Facebook, Flickr, Tumblr, Posterous and Foursquare (you can multitask by checking in using your location!). And don’t forgot to tag your friends or use hashtags {#} <– that is a hashtag in the description so when you tweet your instagram it works double duty!

If you want to follow me on Instagram I am under the name … wait for it …  modchik. I know shocker. I’m modchik on pretty much everything, didya know that has been my screen name since 1995? Crazy.

The photos are also saved into your photo library once they are posted so you can share them other places, and in my case use them for my 365 project (I take a photo a day and post it) which by the way has reached 50 photos as of Saturday, whew.

Stay tuned I have 10 more photo apps to share. Kidding.

Kinda.

See ya tomorrow… I have no idea what I am going to write about this week but that’s part of brilliance of the modchik, random USEFUL crap served up almost daily.

That should be my new tag line.

And YES!!! I’m still in a redesign holding pattern… your survey answers were not pecked out in vain I assure you. My mini face-lift is coming fear not my 10 readers.

Peace out.

What began as a blog about an unexpected pregnancy at midlife morphed into a (sometimes) steady stream of private thoughts made public. I've moved from blogs to photography and now astrology. ... more about the journey here.
