I’m sitting here with my green tea in disbelief. Normally I am already on my second latte by the time I sit down to my computer for some blog time. Snacks are another downfall. I love to sit with my bowl of munchies and mindlessly crunch while I churn out a few blog posts. That has ended too, for the time being at least.
Yesterday I ended my 5 day Reset Ritual Cleanse cleanse with lasagna. Yea, I don’t recommend that to anyone. I was just so exhausted and I had made 3 pans of it and it smelled so yummy I just went face first into it. Today I’m back on the juice and I bought a juicer and about 20 pounds of veggies. I think I’m going to be a successfully reformed carb-o-holic.
If you follow me on instagram you could see this coming a mile away. First it was bearclaws, followed but coldstone and steaks at craft. My version of sending up a flare. I was scared.
But here I am six days later, four pounds lighter and surprisingly I can look at those photos above and not run screaming for the nearest donut shop. Its strange. So let me give the cliff note version of how it went down for all of you out there who are considering a cleanse and why I chose Ritual Cleanse.
One thing about working from a computer is it tends to not do pretty things to ones ahem… backside. I like to call it bloggers butt. I know a HUGE component in achieving this is my failure to get up and MOVE. Yes activity is a must and I think my body just decided to stop burning and start storing. Not good unless you are a bear facing a long winter. I am not a dieter. I will modify what I eat but I will not starve myself or eat steaks and cheese for weeks on end. My experience at Whole Foods and learning about the ANDI nutrient scoring system made me think about how poorly I was treating my body and my kids bodies. I was serving up lost of bread and pasta and very few veggies. Eating veggies actually made me feel a little off, a testament to how much I needed a reset button.
Kathleen and Shanna two of my favorite bloggers had tried Seasonal Ritual Cleanse during the holidays and swore by Day 3 they no longer craved food. So I guess it was going to be like quitting cold turkey. Just wake up one day and replace breakfast with green veggie juice. Er….. um, Ok. I think.
I made myself a mini latte along with a cup of green tea and took my #1 (green) bottle out of the fridge and stared at it. I need that latte there. I took a sip and then 5 sips of tea. I took another sip of coffee and finished my tea and dumped the rest of the coffee out. I realized all I needed was to know that it was there that I wasn’t depriving myself. I cracked open the green bottle and down it went. I actually liked it. I make this cold cucumber spinach soup with lemon that is very similar to the taste so I knew this would not be a problem.
I decided to inflict pain on myself and blog about ribs (oh yea I did).
11 am – #2 (strawberry/watermelon) this was a seasonal pick
Yummy delish like a treat, no stretch her to say I loved this.
1pm – #3 another green
3pm – #4 spicy lemonade – a bit reminiscent of the master cleanse (lemon juice, cayenne, agave) I recommend substituting with the lavender choice if you are like me and get heartburn. I broke out the water crackers and had 4. I HAD to.
5pm – #5 another green – I was more than hungry at this point.
7pm -#6 I skipped and had a legit cheat avocado and lettuce with lemon juice (ok I may have had a bite of scallop and bread) I felt like I did when I did weight watchers years ago, food just tastes so damn good.
Day #2 – I drank 2 sips of coffee and a full cup of green tea. Gas pains. Note to self drink lots of water when you are cleansing. Your day becomes something like drink, pee, repeat. If you don’t chug water you will feel light headed like I did.
My friend Kendel asked me how the cleanse was going. My answer:
“I just chewed a piece of toast and spit it out in the trash THATS how its going” 🙂
I have to be honest its a bit of a mind game at this point. You want food just because you can’t have it. Chewing the toast actually helped me realize I didn’t want it. I did have water crackers throughout the day. My friend Kimberly and I were commiserating together and she happened to be working on a project with me at my house so I had to sneak a cracker, she did the entire 3 day without one BITE of food.
That night I had half of an avocado and a bowl of minestrone which ended up too chunky so I couldn’t eat it (veggy broth is ok) so I watched my daughter eat mac and cheese with buttered bread from across the table. My dinner was the cashew drink also known as #6 and dessert. It is very filling and tastes like a shake. It’s like a reward for getting through the day.
Day 3 – no coffee only green tea. All the drinks no problem. I had no desire for food really. I didn’t feel super energized in fact I felt light headed at times. I think this was a sign that I just wasn’t drinking enough water. Contemplated how I was going to add food back in. Panicked and felt not ready to resume diet as usual and called in another order for 6 more green drinks ala carte. They have a local pick up kitchen so that is an option for Orange County peeps. They also ship out of state so East Coasters you are in luck. Here I am sitting in front of my garden trying to figure out what greens I need to plant for summer.
Day 4 – made an latte but it made my stomach grumble, after a few sips I made my green tea and dumped the cold coffee. Did my first shopping trip since starting the cleanse. No problems, I sailed right past the pastry section, grabbed a whole wheat fig bar. Since I was at Whole Foods I ordered the Dr. Oz. drink and checked in with the my friend Gerry at the Health desk, she gave me a shopping list and encouraged me to keep on going green! Drank juice and water all day and then had a salad and a small piece of swordfish with lots of lemon. Had a bite of bread but wasn’t compelled to eat the entire loaf or a stick of butter, a first. Quiet tummy after, a good sign.
Day 5 – Tea and then a green drink. More green juice for lunch and then I ate a roll, a hot cross bun to be exact, oh carbs why are you so good? More tea, I discovered Tevana Oolong as I shopped on an empty stomach, yum. I came home and made 3 pans of lasagna for friends on bed rest, I almost shoved some freshly grated mozzarella in mouth but stopped short. Strange days I tell ya. I did however decide that lasagna would be fine. It seemed like a good idea at the time. It was not. May I suggest lots of greens and soups when you “transition”, your lower GI track will thank you.
So here I sit contemplating my next move? More tea? toast? I replanted our raised bed with lots of veggies and herbs but that’s going to take another 79 days to come to harvest so in the meantime I bought a juicer. We’ll see how ambitious I get with home juicing.
