Today marks the first day of summer and the longest day of sunlight or darkness if you are south of the equator. For us in southern california that means sunrise at 6:15 and sunset at 8:07 but if you live up north let’s say Seattle you get another HOUR of sunlight.
The photo above was taken in July 2008 it was well after 8pm. My son and I were having dinner at Ray’s just north of downtown Seattle. 2008 was probably my son’s favorite summer, its hard to top that year. Our daughter was 2 and we wanted to focus our attention on him since the last 24 months had really been all about Ava. I took him to Seattle to see his first concert (Foo Fighters which was awwwwsome but maybe a little too soon? for Dave’s colorful commentary giggles in the seat next to me) and tour the Boeing Future of Flight Tour (every boys –and this moms– dream). My husband took him to Sun River in Oregon for a week, he went to Nike golf camp where they played 18 holes days before the US Open (Torrey Pines), spent a week camping in the mountains and a week in the bays of Catalina.
I think we saw our son a total of 3 weeks that summer. A not so bummer summer indeed.
I miss those days. Today my son probably won’t get up until the clouds burn off which will be approxiamately lunch time. He’ll undoubtably look bored, begrudingly put some clothes on and then ask me more money so he can go hang out at the snack shack on the golf course down the street. Sigh.
Like I said I miss 2008, I miss having an eleven year old I really don’t know how to best manage a teenage boy, I think it just might take me a whole summer and an entire bottle of gin (or at least a few G&Ts) to figure it out. I know this too shall pass.
Happy Summer y’all.
