On Saturday you’ll recall was telling you about my latest accessory discovery, I actually was going to title this my ‘Accessory Epiphany‘ but it really isn’t my idea, it was theirs. But I think the idea is underdeveloped and here’s why. You can shop across the globe and find the most incredible trinkets half way around the world, trust me I actually had a hand in the process once, but if no one knows about your wares you aren’t going to move many units. And why would you want to keep a good thing a secret anyway?
I understand that most people think that 90% of the department store at Nordstrom is high end, and I won’t disagree, but they also have buyers that are just like you and I, kids, PTA meetings and play dates and somewhere in between those domestic events we have the occasional meeting, date and even conference when we enjoy stepping up a little on the fashion front. These buyers are also acutely aware of the latest trends in colors, fabrications and styles and they work with their department managers to get you just that in many choices at affordable prices. Welcome to Trend Accessories.
When I walked into the Nordstrom in Fashion Island that day I one thing in mind, returns. The Half-Yearly Sale just about wrapped up had proven once again to be very tempting so I picked a couple things I really didn’t have to have. As I walked through handbags I spotted a corner area next to Designer Handbags, or promise land as I refer to it. The corner had this POP of color that drew me in. I knew it wasn’t in my price range but I wanted to go stroke the furry scarf wall. Looking is free, right?
I spotted a clutch that I immediately recognized from Hinge , I’m sure the woman working there could see my pupils dilate. “Isn’t that fabulous?” “You need to touch that”, ohhhh God if I touch that then I’m going to fall in love with it and then its mine. I’m in the garden of Eden people. I did it. I touched it and I melted like butter. The bag actually felt like butter, cold mesh slinky butter. I flipped over the price tag, $98.00, ok, not cheap but it certainly not $498 like that fine Marc Jacobs tote across the marble aisle. I began to really look now. And that’s when I think I lost consciousness. I was just levitating through the entire department going through each display admiring the well though out color story each bay presented. I can remember those merchandising days like they were yesterday, I am alumni after all.
The gal who helped me was actually the department manager, Jakki. She was such a pleasure to shop with, is it me or does everyone seem happy to be there? I asked her about what EXACTLY was this little slice of heaven tucked away in a corner and she told me that these departments are rather new. There are 14 of them throughout the company. If you are lucky to live near a Nordstrom check it out, you probably have to ask where each one is. I visited the Mission Viejo store a few days ago and their Trend Accessory Dept is upstairs in between Savvy and Studio 121. The accessory Dept at Fashion Island is exceptional, I haven’t seen another so well maintained and organized. These departments specialize in well just what it says, trendy accessories and when I say trendy don’t mistake it for junk. The feature designers like House of Harlow 1960, Hinge, Cara, Michael Kors and Elizabeth and James.
Of course I went home with a few pieces, I’d rather spend the money on accessories that can spruce up what’s already hanging in my closet then go out and invest in a new outfit. Stick to classic pieces like the Harlow Black Leather geometric necklace ($75) this line is owned and designed (and named after) Nicole Ritchie. Next time you feel like you need a whole wardrobe but you can’t splurge I suggest adding a few statement pieces or a new scarf. Fall trends: Rose gold (not a huge fan but ok), mix mediums – handbags with leather and lace and even a dash of chain mail, animal motifs, feather earrings, chain and leather cuffs, big 80s bangles and Wayfarer Sunglasses, have you seen my new Marc Jacobs?
