One show down, two to go, wait here’s the good part, the shows are all in the same week. You are either saying to yourself man, she is a huge Duran Duran fan or…. man she is really nuts.
Truth be told its a little of both.
The last time I saw the boys was the Red Carpet Massacre in 2009. They played my favorite venue, the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. I love the smaller venues it is absolutely the ONLY way to get the intimate FAN experience. Every seat is a good seat.
First of all staying at the Hard Rock Hotel is a music lovers paradise. Floor to ceiling Rock N’ Roll memorabilia including my personal favorite. Prince’s infamous purple studded jacket from Purple Rain. Yeah I worked in a photo of Prince. When you are in close proximity running into rock stars isn’t that hard .. cough cough.. I’m just sayin‘ and no matter where you are in the hotel from the john to the hotels own Starbucks you are listening to a hand picked soundtrack that’s continually being played 24/7. Back in the day they used to play Eric Clapton’s After Midnight EVERY night at the stroke of 12 am. they probably realized its better if guest have no sense of TIME or space when they are gambling and stopped playing it.
That’s me above getting ready to see them at the Joint on the Astronaut Tour in 2005. My sister and I had seen the Reunion Tour the Summer of 2003 when they practically played in our backyard. We were blown away at the sound and the new music and vowed to get on the fan club site so we could get our paws on the VIP packages for the album that launched in 2004, Astronaut. We saw them at Staples Center and Vegas the following spring and we were right back to being full blown Duranies.
There I am backed up to my buddy Simon, I think I should have pinched him to get him smile. I don’t know if that’s even possible, you should see the stream of people that go through the meet and greets, its a lot of camera flashes. See that outfit I am wearing? All purchased hours before, you see half way to Vegas I looked behind me in the back of the car and screamed “Oh my God, my clothes!!” <– true story and first stop we made was to the shops at the Forum. Ted Baker saved my hiney (gold and teal top).
When the door opened we scrambled for front and center. We stood there for what seemed like an eternity but when the show started it didn’t matter. Listening to Simon croon The Chauffeur was all I needed to know that it was all worth it. Every blister, every calf cramp and every toe smash, it was worth it.
And then there was 2009… Nobu dinners …. the Joint … front row, again, BOTH NIGHTS. Dave Keuning and Brandon Flowers, members of Las Vegas natives, the Killers joined them on stage for Planet Earth. Beyond EPIC.
Today I am driving out to see them play tonight in MY FAVORITE place in the city of lights, Las Vegas and then I’m going to turn around the next day and drive to see them at Valley Center but this time I’ll be doing a little side project snapping a photos for Duran Duran’s facebook wall so if you are going FIND ME I’m 6 ft. tall with glasses, I promise I don’t bite.
See you at the show!
