Its December 1st and today is the official start to our 12 Days of Giveaways on the modchik. I have hand selected some of my favorite items I have discovered over the past year and compiled them into a giveaway spree that will last over the next 12 days. Get ready readers we have some great things lined up starting off with the gift of technology.
Ask yourself this, when is the last time you replaced your router? You probably have the latest phone but can you say the same for your home network device? Maybe you’re asking yourself what the heck is a router… well ponder that no more.
After attending a small focus group hosted by Cisco I can now say that my home network is running a little smother and whole lot safer. I hadn’t thought about my router since I bought it over 6 years ago. Like my husband likes to say, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Wrong. Routers age just like any other technology out there, they eventually become obsolete. I like to think of myself as on the cutting edge when it comes to technology but now I realize that my teenager was quickly surpassing my skills.
I have a 5 year old and a 14 year old and although the kindergartener has yet to learn how to navigate a computer its the teenager and his hacker-skilled friends (note: I’m not calling them hackers but they do know more than some of the full time IT guys I know) I have to worry about. He plays games online, perhaps you know about mindcrack, I mean minecraft, according to their website they have over 17 MILLION players registered. And then there are the BIG GUNS (pun intended) like Call of Duty which is no way even remotely as fun unless you are connected via the world wide web so you can blow up your buddy who’s sitting in his man cave half way around the world.
With these portals to the world come hazards. I soon discovered that although my network was secure from others jumping on my bandwidth (like neighbors siphoning off your free WiFi) it was not secure as far as access to any and all things online, which also meant any iPhone within reach of my WiFi could access YouTube video that would make (at the risk of dating myself) Dr. Ruth blush.
Cisco put their top of the line Linksys E4200 Dual Band Router in my hands I was sent back home to install and fortify my domain. I have to tell you the next day I had that thing installed and connected 3 laptops, 2 iPhones, 1 Droid, 1 desktop, a shared external drive, 1 wireless printer and 1 PlayStation in an hour. It’s that simple.
- Simultaneous Dual-Band N (2.4 & 5GHz)

- Maximum range with full 3×3 MIMO antenna
- Gigabit Ethernet 4-port switch
- USB port for shared storage (note external drive must be under 4 TB)
