If you are a small business owner or have a blog then you most likely created a Facebook Page for it, I did in fact I have a few. Ever since the big upgrade to facebook pages in February I have noticed a shift in my business pages. The latest change has quite a lot of people grumbling, its called Promoted (as in PAID) Posts and Promoted Pages, you can see the reach your posts have under each update, link or photo you post to your FB wall, mine holds steady at around 25%, meaning only 25 percent of the people who have LIKED the modchik blog see the update. Now you can choose to pay to have your update or your page promoted. I had my page promoted, I chose to keep it at a budget of $10 max a day, I chose to pay by number of impressions vs. actual click through and I started it on the 28th and it ends over the weekend. Now according to my ad campaign summary my weekly reach went up 3200% I still don’t know what that means and I don’t know how many of those people will stick around or engage in any conversations on the blog page. The graph is impressive but I’m pretty sure that Facebook designed it that way so it looks like I got something for my money. The jury is still out on how to measure your ROI for paid posts or pages, I’ll leave that up to the marketing gurus to figure out, digest and then write it all down in laymens terms so you and I can understand where our dollars go with these kind of campaigns. In the meantime I’ll stick with my plain ol’ unpromoted ways and use this trial run as R&D for this blog post. And if you came here as a result of seeing the ad well then WELCOME !!! I hope you don’t think I bought our new friendship, that sounds so ugly. I’m glad you made it over no matter how you got here.
If you want to know more I Heart Faces did a better recap than I could on how a change in the algorithm can reduce your page presence on facebook. Even better they show you how to create lists on Facebook so you won’t miss an update because let’s face it what you see on Facebook is determined by a mathematical equation not just what you clicked LIKE on. As a blog follower I have found that creating a list helps me hone in on the messages I WANT TO HEAR while muffling the noise from the rest. Its funny I was just reading Seth Godin ‘s blog he talked about about Signal to Noise Ratio in his words ” measurement of the relationship between the stuff you want to hear and the stuff you don’t.” Seth basically was echoing the same sentiments about what’s happening with your message on social media, if you are relying on the same channels using the same methods guess what, you are NOT reaching readers anymore.
“The clickthrough rates on tweets is getting closer and closer to zero. Not because there aren’t links worth clicking on, but because there’s so much junk you don’t have the attention or time to sort it all out.” – Seth Godin
I for one am the girl with the short attention span. I feel like there are so many offers and BREAKING STORIES all demanding to be read N-O-W! that it becomes a stream of blurred updates. I have unsubscribed from so many updates, when you have liked almost 1000 fan pages and business you HAVE to or you’ll never be able to weed out the business stuff from the professional stuff. What I started to do was log on as my business page Lindsey Garrett Photography and like all my photog friends and affiliated businesses that Iwant to keep up to date with. I did the same for the modchik FB page, keeping all the blogs and bloggers I want to keep tabs on and then for my personal page I’m leaving that for friends and someecards I make some streams public like instagram but I recently removed my RSS feed from my personal page (so if that’s your source for new posts just like the modchik blog or you can follow on your RSS feed reader of choice here.
One more way you can promote your page FOR FREE is to the order the promotional Facebook Moo cards. I received my pack this week and I am very pleased with what I got for $5 (I think I had to pay for shipping). Make sure you are happy with the cover photo becuase that will be the photo on the card, you can make up to 50 different cards with printfinity (moos trademark print as many different phots as you want) as long as it was uploaded as a cover photo. You can make cards for personal pages too! It also pulls the avatar (small profile pic) and the back is left with an area where you can modify the text. Check out your fan page and look for the offer in the top right hand corner. Let me know if you don’t have it I’m curious if its offered to everyone.
I ordered some for the modchik here they are.
I also made new cards for my photography business and they came out even better than expected.
I have gushed about how much I love moo before. If you need a referral code I have some for 10% off your first order just leave a comment with your email and I’ll send you a code. Here’s a little more info about Moo and their awesome cards. Enjoy!
