My kids started school Wednesday and then clouds parted and angels began to sing … hallelujah or was it Andy Williams’ The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, they may have BOTH been playing. I can’t quite remember. I didn’t think this day would come. The day when both kids were in school. All. Day. Long. I learned to enjoy summer with its decadent late mornings and cinnamon rolls. I didn’t miss the eight round trips to school I was making M-F. So when the first day of school began to show up on my calendar reminder and felt a little anxious. That all disappeared the moment I found myself in silence at the kitchen table savoring the last of my Kona coffee.
This year with everything going on with my family school sort of snuck up on us. I did manage one trip to Tarj-jay so I could buy precisely 6 navy polos, 2 navy pleated skorts (not skirts) and 1 navy blue polo dress. Ava had a choice in color but insisted she does not ‘do khaki’. Is that a blonde thing? I don’t get it. She is struggling with the whole uniform thing. Ava fancies wearing head to toe hot pink with a pink jacket for good measure. I told her I would give her a little leeway with the socks and shoes. She pushed that limit with what I call seizure inducing strobe sneakers and her knee lace up high rainbow high tops. I’m waiting for the first infraction notice to come home already. I miss the preschool days when she would let me dress her. I have a feeling its only going to get harder.
Oh my heart aches to see how much my kids have grown up. Oh wait a minute that date is wrong that was 2009, 4 and 13. Somewhere between that photo and this year my son has grown something like 2 feet. At 15 he is 6 1′ with a size 14 shoe.
Same backpack on day one, we were a little late in ordering her new one its on dock somewhere sitting in an Amazon box.
My daughter has the same teacher she had last year, sort of. You see when she started kindergarten last year I stuck her in the wrong line (above) and it wasn’t until after lunch they realized she was in the wrong classroom. Oops. Funny we ended up in the same line up a year later with the same teacher.
I kinda almost fell over when Lydon stopped and actually SMILED for me this year. When I pulled up the first day photos I laughed to myself, he wore the same shirt but last year minus the smile. I think he was so nervous starting high school last year he couldn’t even bring himself to break form hence the photo on the left. Classic freshman freak out. Look how handsome he is becoming. This can only mean one thing this year…. girls.
Looking at my photos this year of the first day I can see a big change in my shooting habits. Gone are the days of taking hundreds of photos. I’m lucky if I took twenty this year and one Polaroid. It feels good not adding to my digital clutter. Maybe this will be the year I sort through that 6TB hard drive filled with photos from the past 5 years.
