According to Google everyone has been looking at ways to make an end of the year slideshow. I could see people visiting from all over the globe were reading the tutorial MAKE A SLIDESHOW FOR INSTAGRAM USING FLIPAGRAM and I felt like I was serving up old information. Since that article was written Flipagram has gone from 1.3 to most recently (Jan 10, 2014) ver. 2.94, with so many changes including in app sharing, I thought a new post would useful. I decided to take the app for a spin myself and see if I could fit an entire year of Instagrams into one video. I was successful which means one of two things either I really ramped down on my Instagram use or the slideshow is so fast it may or may not induce vertigo. Let’s see how smooth the easy the process was.
When I opened Flipagram it alerted me that I was using an older version. According to their iTunes page app updates include:
- Facebook Sharing (in app)
- Fixes Facebook deletion / removal issue
- Instagram Sharing
- Your caption now has @mentions of everyone featured in your Flipagram
- Tumblr Sharing (in app)
- One click sharing of your creations to tumblr
- Duplicate Photos is back!
- To access, Tap to edit a Photo
- Color Titles and Watermark
- General UI clean-up and guidance
- Bug Fixes and Crashes
When you open the app for the first time you’ll find a smooth interface with a few tutorials to introduce new features and tools.
When choosing the photos to include you will have an option to pull from your photo library, Instagram or Facebook. I selected Instagram which pulled up my entire gallery, you can scroll back to day 1 if you want to. I tapped on my favorite 30 images and clicked Next … at that point a new screen comes up and you have a chance to edit your final pics. You can delete the images you dont’ want or edit each photo individually, like cropping out a border.
You have a few new options with the latest version including sorting and cropping.
When you have all your photos chosen, you can add music. You can adjust where you want the song to begin by using your finger and dragging the line to the exact moment to begin play. The song I chose ‘Take the Long Way Home’ has a very long single note intro so I skipped it entirely. You have an in app purchase option to remove their name on your video. The next step is to choose how you want to share your video.
After I realized you have the option to make the video as long as you want, or tailored to fit within the 15 seconds parameters. I decided to see if I could fit my entire Instagrams for one year, turns out if I adjust the flip rate (using the slider) to 15 sec I could fit them all in at 39 seconds. Making my video a little longer also allowed me to include the first line of the song which I really wanted. So tapped on the back arrow (top left) added 200 more photos and changed the rate setting from auto to custom dragging the slider towards the rabbit. In the end I ended up with duplicate images in the slideshow and I think that’s because I added versus closing the project and starting a new one. Oh well. I can live with the imperfections.
I tried several sharing channels including in app via Instagram which worked beautifully. You will have to shorten your video if you try to share a Flipagram that is over 15 seconds within Instagram. You can also upload directly to YouTube, the app will prompt you to sign into Google and then its a one click upload.
You can also upload to Flipagram which creates a shareable link you can embed into a page on your blog. I love that Flipagram adds a link to the music that was used, could be a great way for you to discover new music.
This is just the start for me, I already see some cool potential with creating a video around a project or just one subject. You can get more ideas on Flipagram’s Tumblr, check out Beyoncés 2013 Flipagram. I am impressed with how easy it is to share among the various social media channels.
Check out a Flipagram made by skwii (one of my favorite instagrammers) He masters the pause by adding multiple copies of the same image (I suspect), that is a new feature with the latest update.
The app is also available in the Android store. If you have any additional tips please leave them in the comments. Please note that I am not affiliated with the app developers in any way and can not provide support for technical issues. You laugh but I had many comments on the previous Flipagram post with just that. But as always I will try my best to answer question if I can. Cheers!
